All proceeds from Pedal the Cause stay in San Diego to fund innovative cancer research with our four world-class beneficiaries. The research that gets funded through Pedal the Cause is collaborative and translational and focuses on finding new treatments and preventions for many different types of cancer.
These three institutions: Moores Cancer Center at UCSD Health, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, have come together to form a novel collaboration- The San Diego National Cancer Institute- Designated Cancer Centers Council or C3. These singular institutions have formed this novel collaboration to leverage their distinct and combined resources and talents to accelerate understanding and innovative approaches for the treatment and prevention of cancer, the second leading cause of death in the nation and leading cause in San Diego. The mission of C3 is to both exploit and create collaborative opportunities made possible by the extraordinary biomedical environment and resources in San Diego, with so many excellent cancer scientists and physicians. The goal is to provide an ongoing forum for increased interaction among the cancer centers and among people, with the aim of a deeper understanding of cancer and, ultimately, more and better treatments.
Established in 1978, UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center is one of just 41 National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and the only one in the San Diego region. Such centers are prominent among the leading institutions in the nation dedicated to scientific innovation and clinical excellence. This designation, reserved for centers with the highest achievements in cancer research, clinical care, education and community contributions, makes an enormous difference to our patients. Studies show that outcomes are better at NCI-designated centers. Moores Cancer Center's mission is to save lives by translating promising scientific discoveries into new options for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and for the amelioration of pain. A unique "bench-to-bedside" approach to cancer research and patient care supports the broadest range of cancer activities in the San Diego region. From research in molecular genetics to the most advanced treatments, Moores Cancer Center is at the forefront of the fight against cancer, developing promising new therapies and making them available to patients with cancer.
Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (SBP) is an independent nonprofit research organization that blends cutting-edge fundamental research with robust drug discovery to address unmet clinical needs in the areas of cancer, neuroscience, immunity, and metabolic disorders. The Institute invests in talent, technology, and partnerships to accelerate the translation of laboratory discoveries that will have the greatest impact on patients. Recognized for its world-class NCI-designated Cancer Center and the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, SBP employs more than 1,000 scientists and staff in San Diego (La Jolla), Calif., and Orlando (Lake Nona), Fla. For more information, visit us at SBPdiscovery.org. The Institute can also be found on Facebook at facebook.com/SBPdiscovery and on Twitter @SBPdiscovery.
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is one of the world's preeminent basic research institutions, where internationally renowned faculty probe fundamental life science questions in a unique, collaborative and creative environment. Experts come from around the globe to work in open collaboration- conducting innovative and daring research, mapping discoveries and developing blueprints so that cures can happen, anywhere in the world. Founded in 1970 to generate new therapies for patients, the Salk Cancer Center has produced a number of groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research such as: discovering a simplified and economical way to make Ara-C, a drug that prevents cancer cells from copying their genomes and dividing; identifying a chemical on-off switch that causes cells to become cancerous, paving the way to development of the leukemia drug Gleevec; and pioneering stripped-down viruses that may one day be used to destroy cancerous cells and enhance healthy cells' ability to fight cancer. Today, using powerful new experimental methods and technologies, Salk scientists continue to unlock cancer's mysteries and translate discoveries into better therapies.
Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego is a 520-bed pediatric care facility providing the largest source of comprehensive pediatric medical services in San Diego, Southern Riverside and Imperial counties. Rady Children's is the only hospital in the San Diego area dedicated exclusively to pediatric healthcare and is the region's only designated pediatric trauma center. In June 2015, U.S. News & World Report ranked Rady Children's among the best children's hospitals in the nation in all ten pediatric specialties the magazine surveyed.
